Experienced Baltimore Litigator Helps Divorcing Spouses Part Ways

Responsive legal support for child custody, child support, and equitable distribution in Maryland

No matter why your marriage is ending, it’s time to look to the future. At the Law Office of Stacey E. Andersen, LLC, I focus on helping you rebuild your life by providing you with high-quality divorce counsel. Having spent the last 20 years representing Maryland spouses in marital breakups, I sympathize deeply with your situation. And as a skilled trial attorney, I am prepared to fight passionately to protect your assets and rights as well as the rights of your children. Whether you need help drafting a divorce agreement or resolving a contested child custody matter, I am ready to represent you with the competence and integrity you deserve.

Filing for divorce in Maryland

Maryland recognizes two types of divorce: limited and absolute. A limited divorce is similar to what other states refer to as legal separation. An absolute divorce is a final dissolution of your marriage that fully and finally “breaks” the legal ties between you and your spouse.

Whether you’re contemplating divorce or ready to file, I can evaluate your situation and safeguard your rights. As a divorce lawyer with notable experience in and out of the courtroom, I am prepared to resolve your divorce case so that you can move on with confidence.

Distributing your marital assets and property

One of the issues that you and your spouse must resolve before your divorce can be finalized is how your marital assets should be divided. Couples who cannot come to an agreement on their own will require the court’s assistance. Keep in mind that since Maryland is an equitable distribution state, your marital possessions, including bank accounts, stocks, retirement assets and other assets accumulated during the marriage, will be divided in a manner that is fair, though not necessarily equal. The protection of my clients’ property assets relies on taking an informed approach to the analysis of your assets and the best options available to you. That may involve engaging financial services experts, business valuation experts, and/or forensic financial professionals.

Negotiating child custody and child support

Where children will live and how they will be supported are among the most hotly contested issues in divorce. I represent divorcing spouses in the following family law matters that involve their children:

  • Child custody — In Maryland, the court favors whatever custody arrangement it deems to be in the best interests of the child. In most cases, the court will strive to order a custody plan that involves both parents in their child’s life. Depending on your situation, the court may order a sole or joint physical and/or legal custody arrangement.
  • Child support — Child support is payment made from the noncustodial parent to the custodial parent for the purpose of raising the couple’s child. I have an in-depth understanding of Maryland’s child support guidelines and can work closely with you and your child’s other parent to hash out a fair support arrangement. If your financial circumstances change after your divorce, I can also assist you in seeking a modification of an existing child support order.

Understanding the sensitive nature of your child custody case, I can assist you and your spouse in coming to a mutually acceptable agreement through mediation. Whenever necessary, however, I can and will assert your parental rights in court.
